5 Microwave Hacks to Survive the Summer Heat

On sweltering summer days, the last thing you want to do is linger in front of a hot stove. To make mealtime manageable, let your microwave take some of the heat. To get you thinking beyond reheating leftovers, here are 5 microwave hacks to help you survive summer.

1. Poach Egg

A poached egg can be a quick and easy breakfast, and it’s also the perfect complement to sautéed summer produce, but the stovetop technique can be time-consuming and tricky. Instead, turn to the microwave to get the perfect egg in 1 minute flat.

Here’s how: Fill a PYREX® PRO 1.67-CUP ROUND STORAGE DISH W/ NAVY VENTED LID with 1/2 cup of water. Gently crack an egg into the water, making sure it’s completely submerged. Cover with the lid and microwave on High for about 1 minute, or until the white is set but yolk is still runny. With a slotted spoon, transfer egg to a plate and enjoy!

2. Roast Garlic

The sweet, creamy flavour of roasted garlic transforms any dish into a delight. But keeping the oven on for over an hour is a summer no-go. Use this shortcut to get your favourite flavour without breaking a sweat.

Here’s how: Cut off and discard the top of a garlic bulb; place bulb in a PYREX® ULTIMATE 2 CUP ROUND STORAGE DISH. Drizzle with olive oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper if desired. Add 2 tablespoons of water to the bottom of the bowl. Cover with lid and microwave at 50% power for about 7 minutes. Let stand 1 minute before uncovering. Squeeze roasted garlic out of the skin onto veggies—or whatever you please!

3. Extra Squeeze

To cool off with a glass of fresh lemonade, heat the lemons first. A quick warm-up helps break down the cells in the lemons so you’ll get more juice from each squeeze.

Here’s how: Puncture the skin of the lemon with a fork and microwave on High for 20 seconds. Slice in half, squeeze and enjoy!

4. Clean Corn

Clean corn easily with a quick spin in the microwave. No silky strings attached.

Here’s how: Take an un-shucked cob of corn, cut 1 inch from the bottom of the stalk with a sharp knife and place in the microwave. Microwave on High for 2 minutes. Remove from the microwave with a dish towel or pot holder. When cool enough to handle, hold the uncut end and gently shake. The ear of corn will slide right out.

5. Steam Fish

Reheating fish in the microwave may be all you’ve ever thought to do. But starting with an uncooked fillet and using this steaming technique creates moist, flavourful fish every time.

Here’s how: Place 6 tablespoons of water in the bottom of a PYREX® SIMPLY STORE® 6 CUP RECTANGULAR DISH W/ BLUE LID. Place a 1-inch-thick fresh (or thawed) fish fillet in the bowl; drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Cover with lid and microwave on High for 4 to 5 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork. For a complete meal, serve with microwaved steamed veggies.

Turn off the stove and oven this summer! With these 5 microwave hacks in hand, you can keep your cooking cool all season long.

  • LIQUID LAYER.Before baking or cooking in your glassware, be sure to add a layer of liquid to cover the bottom of the dish.
  • HOT TO HANDLE.Glassware gets hot, even with a short stint in the microwave. Always remove the container with an oven mitt and allow a few minutes to cool before handling. Also, never put a hot Pyrex glass dish directly on a cool countertop; always place the dish on a soft trivet or pot holder.
  • SUDDEN SPIKE.When transitioning glassware from hot to cold or vice versa, allow time for it to come to room temperature to prevent breakage.
